Emergency and Self-Sufficiency Services Program
When adults and families in our community are struggling, our Emergency and Self-Sufficiency Services Program (ESSP) responds with emergency food (fresh and non-perishable) and personal care supplies, referrals for emergency clothing and other resources, and financial assistance for rent and utilities. Clients who use ESSP can access other Reston Interfaith services, including case management, which can help individuals and families overcome the obstacles that often lead to crisis in the first place. For families who are unable to get to ESSP, we deliver food to local low-income housing complexes and senior clients. Seasonally, we distribute backpacks and school supplies in partnership with Kids R First, and holiday food and gifts.
Our goal is to help them reach and maintain their highest possible levels of self-sufficiency and stability.
This year, the need is greater than ever. Since September 2008, we have seen a 50% increase in the numbers of new households receiving services from ESSP, and many of these new households are accessing social services for the first time or due to layoffs or lack of work. Thanks to the support of our community, we have been able to meet rising needs and keep those that we serve through ESSP in their homes.
